About Beinn Gharbh

Rising between the remote glens of Kingie and Dessary, this rugged peak sits at the heart of the 'Rough Bounds.' It offers a demanding, pathless ascent over broken crags and heather. The summit provides an exceptional perspective on the neighbouring Munro, Sgùrr Mòr, and the deep waters of Loch Quoich to the north.

Did You Know?

  • Beinn Gharbh translates from Scottish Gaelic as "Rough Hill", a fitting title for a mountain defined by its complex, rocky northern face and lack of established trails.
  • The summit serves as a grandstand for the "Rough Bounds of Knoydart" to the west, an area often described as the last great wilderness of Highland Scotland.
  • Looking north, the view is dominated by the sprawling waters of Loch Quoich, with the long high ridge of the South Glen Shiel Munros forming the horizon.
  • To the south, the hill overlooks the historic through-route of Glen Dessary, a glen once populated by many families before the Highland Clearances and now a key approach for remote peaks.
  • At 895 metres, it falls just short of the height of its more famous eastern neighbour, Sgùrr Mòr, meaning it sees only a fraction of the foot traffic.
