About Mullagh Ouyr

Rising above the Laxey Valley, this rounded Manx upland offers a quieter alternative to neighbouring Snaefell. The terrain is classic moorland, predominantly heather and peat. From the summit, you earn clear views of North Barrule, the sweep of the Laxey Glen, and the distant fells of the Lake District.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Manx Gaelic 'Mullagh', meaning a top or summit, and 'Ouyr', meaning pale, dun, or grey, describing the specific colour of the moorland vegetation and grasses found here.
  • The hill is frequently bagged alongside its neighbour Clagh Ouyr, with many walkers starting from the 'Black Hut' on the A18 mountain road for a quick but rewarding ascent.
  • From the summit cairn, you are treated to a distinct perspective of Snaefell to the north-west and a clear line of sight down to the village of Laxey and its famous giant waterwheel.
  • It is one of the few places where you can enjoy the silence of a 400-metre peak while simultaneously watching the traffic on the island's mountain road winding its way through the valley below.
