About East Muchra Hill
Rising above the Ettrick Water, this rounded Southern Upland summit offers a quiet, pathless experience characteristic of the region. Its grassy slopes and peat-mossed ridges provide an honest day’s walking, with the summit serving as an excellent vantage point for surveying the deep-cut valleys and the nearby mass of Ettrick Pen.

Did You Know?
- •The name is likely rooted in the Gaelic 'muc', meaning pig, combined with 'rath', which can refer to a fort or an enclosure, pointing to the area's historical agricultural use.
- •It forms part of a natural high-level link between the Ettrick Valley and the glens to the west, often climbed as part of a circuit including its slightly higher neighbour, Muchra Hill.
- •The summit offers a clear, unobstructed perspective across the Ettrick Forest towards the distinctive triple-peaked silhouette of the Eildon Hills in the east.
- •The local sheep are usually the only company you will have on the ascent, and they are notoriously tight-lipped about the easiest way through the summit's occasional boggy patches.
