Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scots word 'grain', originating from the Old Norse 'grein', referring to a branch of a stream or a fork in a valley; Grain Heads sits at the source of several such burns feeding the Ettrick Water.
  • From its 531-metre vantage point, there are clear, earned views across the deep glacial trough of Moffat Dale toward the steep, craggy slopes of Carrifran Gans.
  • The hill is positioned on the major watershed of southern Scotland, where rainfall on the eastern slopes eventually reaches the North Sea via the River Tweed, while western drainage flows toward the Solway Firth.
  • The summit provides a masterclass in the Southern Upland 'grey-green' palette, offering a view that is spectacular if you like grass, and somewhat repetitive if you do not.
