About Blackcraig Hill

Rising above the steep-sided Glen Afton, this craggy outlier of the Carsphairn Hills offers a rugged contrast to the rolling moorland nearby. Its rocky character and proximity to New Cumnock make it a rewarding short climb with specific perspectives over the Afton Reservoir and the higher Scaur hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is descriptive Scots, referring to the dark, rocky outcrops or 'craigs' that define the hill's steeper western face. This ruggedness is a notable departure from the smooth, grass-covered slopes typical of many neighbouring Southern Upland peaks.
  • The hill overlooks Glen Afton, the valley that inspired Robert Burns’ 1789 poem 'Sweet Afton'. While the poem describes a gentle landscape, the ascent of Blackcraig Hill is considerably more strenuous than the 'disturb not her dream' imagery of the verse suggests.
  • From the summit, walkers have a clear vantage point south towards the higher 700-metre peaks of Meaul and Cairnsmore of Carsphairn, while the northern outlook stretches across the industrial heart of Ayrshire towards the distant peaks of Arran on a clear day.
  • The hill is frequently climbed as part of a high-level circuit around the Afton Reservoir, often paired with the higher Blacklorg Hill to the south to take advantage of the ridge lines that connect these northern Carsphairn outposts.
  • The western flank is steep enough to ensure that anyone attempting to recite Burns' poetry while climbing will likely find themselves too short of breath to reach the second stanza.
