About Auchincally Hill

Tucked away in the eastern reaches of the Carsphairn Hills, this 506m moorland summit offers a quiet alternative to its higher neighbours. Characterised by rolling grass and forest fringes, it provides a fine vantage point over the Shinnel Water valley towards the more prominent peaks of Meikle Millyea and Cairnsmore of Carsphairn.

Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in the Gaelic Achadh na Caillich, translating to the 'Field of the Hag' or 'Field of the Veiled One,' a common topographical reference in the Southern Uplands to either a mythical figure or historical church land.
  • Its position offers a clear, unobstructed perspective across the Shinnel Water towards the Glen-Afton hills and the massive, rounded dome of Cairnsmore of Carsphairn to the west.
  • While it lacks the height to qualify for major hill lists, it serves as an excellent intermediate point for walkers following the old boundary lines between Dumfriesshire and Ayrshire.
  • It is the sort of hill that reminds you Scotland is not just made of jagged peaks, but of vast, undulating grass where the only company is likely a startled grouse or a particularly hardy blackface sheep.
