About Creag na Gamhna

Rising above the Cononish Glen near Tyndrum, this rugged, heathery shoulder is most frequently encountered as a secondary top on the approach to the mighty Ben Lui. It offers a quieter, more intimate perspective of the Central Highlands' 'Queen of Mountains' and the sprawling gold-mining territory of the Glen Lochy hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Creag na Gamhna, which translates as the 'Rock of the Heifer', likely referring to the historical use of these lower slopes for grazing young cattle.
  • Sitting on the eastern ridge of Beinn a' Chleibh, the summit provides a clear view of the Cononish gold mine, Scotland’s only commercial gold mining operation.
  • The summit offers an unobstructed view of the West Highland Way as it passes through the glen below, framed by the distant, sharp peaks of Ben More and Stob Binnein.
  • It serves as an excellent low-level alternative for days when the cloud base has firmly swallowed the higher 1,000-metre summits of the Ben Lui massif.
