About Hill of Snowy Slack

Sitting quietly in the eastern Ochils, this rounded moorland summit offers a gentler alternative to the steeper southern scarp. Often combined with Innerdownie, the grassy top provides a grandstand view over the Lower Glendevon Reservoir, with the distant Lomonds of Fife visible to the east on clear days.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scots word 'slack', meaning a hollow or a pass between hills; 'Snowy Slack' refers to the specific dip where winter drifts tend to accumulate and linger.
  • It is most frequently visited as part of a high-level circular walk from Glendevon, usually linked with the neighbouring summits of Innerdownie and Whitewisp Hill.
  • The hill provides an excellent vantage point for surveying the Glendevon reservoirs, particularly the Lower Glendevon Reservoir which sits directly to the north.
  • In keeping with its name, the depressions around the summit are exceptionally efficient at trapping moisture, meaning a 'dry' ascent usually involves navigating several significant patches of black peat bog.
