Did You Know?

  • In Scottish Gaelic, the name Beinn Fhada translates to 'Long Hill.' It is a common descriptive name throughout the Highlands, used here to describe the elongated nature of the ridge when viewed from the Lochbuie glen.
  • The summit serves as an excellent vantage point for surveying the coastal topography of southern Mull, specifically the narrow neck of land that separates the sea at Loch Buie from the freshwater Loch Uisg.
  • The hill is often climbed in tandem with its higher neighbor, Ben Buie, though the ground between the two is notoriously uneven and can be exceptionally boggy after the frequent Hebridean rains.
  • On the lower eastern slopes near the start of the common ascent path lies the Lochbuie Stone Circle, a prehistoric monument consisting of nine granite stones set in a dramatic landscape framed by this hill and the sea.
  • While the climb is relatively modest in height, the proximity to the coast means you start almost at sea level, ensuring you earn every one of the 502 metres of ascent.
