About Creag Ruadh

Rising steeply above the upper Spey valley near Laggan, this heather-clad Graham offers a vantage point far superior to its modest height. Its craggy southern face provides a sharp contrast to the rolling moorland of the Monadhliath behind, overlooking the Pattack and Spey confluence toward the high Cairngorm plateaus.

Did You Know?

  • The name Creag Ruadh is Scottish Gaelic for 'Red Crag,' most likely referring to the exposed rock on its steep southern face, which can take on a warm, russet glow during sunset.
  • A popular ascent starts from the village of Laggan, climbing through the forestry near the Wolftrax mountain biking centre before emerging onto the open, often boggy moorland that characterises this southern edge of the Monadhliath.
  • The summit provides an exceptional 'big picture' view of the Cairngorms across the strath, where the deep cleft of the Lairig Ghru is clearly visible between the masses of Braeriach and Ben Macdui.
  • Due to its isolation from higher ground, this hill is classified as a Marilyn; with over 300 metres of prominence, it acts as a natural grandstand for the surrounding Badenoch landscape.
  • Despite the name suggesting a dramatic red precipice, walkers should expect to spend significantly more time navigating various shades of brown peat than admiring crimson stone.
