About Meall nan Sac

Rising above the eastern side of the A93 south of the Spittal of Glenshee, this rounded, heathery hill provides a manageable ascent with grand rewards. It offers a commanding vantage point over the Shee Water, looking directly towards the high, stony ridges of Creag Leacach and the Cairnwell Pass.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Meall nan Sac', which translates to 'Hill of the Sacks' or 'Hill of the Packs', likely a descriptive nod to the hummocky, lumpy appearance of its summit profile.
  • The summit provides a focused, 'earned' view of the Spittal of Glenshee below, a location historically significant as the site of a hospice for travellers and a key junction on the old military road through the Grampians.
  • From the top, the massive scale of the neighbouring Glenshee Munros is clearly visible, specifically the long, scree-covered south-east ridge of Creag Leacach and the high plateau of Glas Maol.
  • While the higher peaks of the Cairnwell Pass are often swaddled in cloud or dominated by ski lift infrastructure, this lower outlier usually remains clear, offering a quieter and more natural walking experience.
  • Local travellers often use the visibility of the heather lines on these lower slopes as a practical gauge for judging the severity of snow drifting further north on the high road towards Braemar.
