Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'the black rounded hill of the bridge'. While the 'bridge' likely refers to a historic crossing of the River Finnan, the hill now overlooks the much more famous concrete Glenfinnan Viaduct further down the glen.
  • From the summit, walkers gain an exceptional view of the 'Matterhorn of Glenfinnan'—the sharp, distinctive peak of Streap—which sits directly to the west across the deep glen of the Allt a’ Chaol-ghleann.
  • The terrain is typical of the Lochaber 'rough bounds', consisting of wet heath and awkward peat hags that lack formal paths, making it a useful test of navigation when the Atlantic mists roll in.
  • Despite its proximity to one of Scotland's most photographed landmarks, the hill remains blissfully ignored by the crowds, offering a solitary experience for those willing to actually exert themselves.
