About Glas-charn South Top

Rising above the Dirrie More near Braemore Junction, this remote heathery hump offers a rugged, pathless ascent. It occupies the wild moorland between the A835 and the Fisherfield Forest, providing an excellent, uncrowded vantage point to look across to the distinctive spiked silhouette of An Teallach and the massive forms of the Fannichs.

Did You Know?

  • The name Glas-charn is derived from the Scottish Gaelic for 'green cairn', usually signifying a hill where grass or moss provides a verdant contrast to the surrounding darker heather or grey scree.
  • The summit offers a clear and unusual perspective on the 'Big Six' Munros of the Fisherfield Forest, with the jagged ridge of An Teallach particularly prominent to the west.
  • While the main Glas-charn summit sits at 601 metres, this South Top provides a better view into the deep trough of the Abhainn na Biastan valley.
  • Like many 'Green Cairns' in the Highlands, the summit is often less of a verdant pasture and more of a study in the various shades of grey and brown provided by saturated peat and lichen-covered stones.
