Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Black Cairn,' a descriptive title likely referring to the dark, heathery hue of the summit plateau or a specific outcrop of weathered rock.
  • The summit provides a clear perspective of the Great Glen's geography, with the peaks of the Monadhliath to the northeast and the serrated ridges of Glen Shiel visible on the western horizon.
  • The hill overlooks the Dundreggan rewilding project, a significant conservation area where the restoration of native Caledonian woodland is encouraging the return of golden eagles and black grouse.
  • At 592 metres, it sits just seventeen metres short of the official height required to be classified as a Graham, a shortfall that effectively protects the summit from the footfall of dedicated list-tickers.
