About Craigrae Beg

Situated in the rugged Galloway Forest Park, this 518-metre peak offers a quieter alternative to the nearby Merrick. The terrain is characteristically boggy and tussocky, rewarding those who persevere with clear sights across the Silver Flowe moss and toward the distinctive granite profile of Curleywee to the south.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Creag', meaning crag or rocky hill, and 'beag', meaning small. It serves as the lower companion to the adjacent Craigrae Fell, distinguishing the 'little' crag from its larger neighbour.
  • The hill sits on the edge of the Silver Flowe, a National Nature Reserve renowned as the least disturbed and most varied extent of blanket mire in the UK.
  • From the summit, the view north is dominated by the massive bulk of the Merrick, the highest point in the Southern Uplands, while the steep slopes of Millfore are visible across the valley to the south.
  • In true Galloway style, the challenge here is rarely the gradient, but rather the persistent negotiation of calf-deep tussocks that make a 500-metre hill feel twice its actual height.
