Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Meall Dubh', which translates as 'Black Rounded Hill', likely referring to the dark, heather-clad slopes that contrast with the more rocky, grey peaks found further west.
  • Standing at 1994 feet, the hill misses out on the 2,000-foot benchmark used for many major Scottish hill lists by just six feet, ensuring it remains a quiet spot frequented mainly by local walkers and peak-baggers.
  • The summit offers an excellent vantage point for surveying the transition of the landscape: to the south lies the fertile strath of the River Tummel, while to the west, the vast, inhospitable expanse of Rannoch Moor stretches toward the horizon.
  • In the right light, the view west from the top reveals the distant, jagged silhouettes of the Black Mount and the Glencoe hills, framed by the long reach of Loch Rannoch below.
  • Its proximity to the road near Trinafour makes it look like a straightforward afternoon stroll, right up until you discover that the Rannoch area’s reputation for deep, unforgiving peat hags is entirely well-founded.
