About Cruban Mor

Rising above the A9 near Newtonmore, this understated Highland hill provides an accessible vantage point over the Badenoch valley. Its heather-clad slopes offer a straightforward ascent, rewarded by an expansive perspective of the Cairngorm giants across the Spey, far removed from the busier summits of the main range.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Crùban Mòr', which translates as the 'Great Hunchback', describing the hill's squat, rounded appearance when seen from the valley floor.
  • The summit provides an exceptional view of the western Cairngorm plateau; the high peaks of Braeriach and the shattered crags of Sgoran Dubh Mòr are clearly visible rising above the forests of Glen Feshie.
  • Its smaller neighbour to the south-west is Cruban Beag (the 'Little Hunchback'), and the two hills together form a distinctive gateway for travellers heading north into the Badenoch district.
  • In a region dominated by the massive 1,000-metre plateaus of the Monadhliath and Cairngorms, this hill is often used by locals as a reliable barometer for checking cloud levels and weather conditions on the higher tops.
  • While the name suggests something 'Great', the hill is sufficiently modest that a fit walker can reach the top, enjoy the view, and be back at a Newtonmore cafe before their tea has properly cooled.
