About Creag nan Caorann

Rising above the remote forestry of Glen Hurich, this rugged, heathery summit offers a quiet vantage point over the wild landscapes of Moidart and Ardgour. While modest in height, the craggy terrain provides a genuine sense of solitude, with expansive views looking north across the long, deep reaches of Loch Shiel.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Creag nan Caorann', meaning 'Crag of the Rowans'. In Highland folklore, the rowan tree was often planted near dwellings to ward off evil spirits, but on hillsides like this, they are simply hardy survivors in the rocky clefts.
  • The summit offers a clear, unobstructed line of sight toward the massive peaks of the Rois-Bheinn massif to the northwest and the distinctive profile of Sgùrr na Ba Glaise.
  • Accessing the hill usually requires navigating the commercial forestry tracks of Glen Hurich, followed by a steep, pathless pull through heather and broken rock that is typical of the Ardgour hinterland.
  • For a hill named after rowan trees, you may well find yourself spending more time looking for a surviving sapling than you will trying to find a boggy patch to sink a boot into.
