Classifications

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'the black crag', a reference to the dark, rocky outcrops that characterise its steep slopes and complex ridgeline.
  • Despite standing at only 756 metres, Creag Dhubh is often regarded as a true mountain rather than merely a hill, thanks to its challenging terrain and prominent position above the Spey valley.
  • The hill sits in a strategic position between Glen Banchor and the River Calder to the north, with the River Spey valley sweeping below to the south and south-west.
  • The summit offers unusually extensive views for a hill of this height, taking in the broad sweep of Strathspey, the remote Corrieyairack Pass, and the imposing cliffs of Creag Meagaidh across the valley.
  • Its craggy slopes and difficult terrain make it a more technical proposition than many Munros, despite falling well short of that classification's 914-metre threshold.
