About Knott

Rising between the quiet corridors of Dentdale and Garsdale, this modest summit offers a tranquil escape from the busier Three Peaks. Its grassy slopes are typical of the Yorkshire Dales' northern fringes, providing a fine vantage point to survey the massive southern slopes of the nearby Howgill Fells.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old Norse 'knutr', a term commonly used across the northern counties to describe a small, rocky hill or a prominent 'knot' of land standing out from a ridge.
  • From the summit, the long, whale-backed ridge of Whernside is clearly visible to the south, while the steep, velvety slopes of the Howgill Fells dominate the horizon to the northwest.
  • The hill forms part of the high ground between Dentdale and Garsdale; walkers often cross its slopes when traversing the ridge toward the slightly higher Rise Hill to the northeast.
  • The famous Settle-Carlisle Railway skirts the lower eastern flanks of the fell, passing near Dent Station—the highest mainline station in England—which sits at the head of the neighboring valley.
  • Navigating to the correct summit requires a keen eye on the map; between the various Knotts, Great Knotts, and Knoutberries in this corner of the Dales, it is remarkably easy to bag the wrong lump of grass entirely.
