Did You Know?

  • The name translates simply from Welsh as 'The Hill' or 'The Slope,' a straightforward title for a landform that defines the skyline above the village of Llechfaen. In local usage, 'allt' frequently refers to a wooded incline, reflecting the patches of timber that still dot its lower flanks.
  • From the summit, the view west across the Usk Valley is particularly rewarding, offering a sharp profile of the central Brecon Beacons, including the distinctive flat-topped summits of Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
  • Despite its relatively low elevation, the hill is classified as a Hump, meaning it has at least 100 metres of prominence from the surrounding landscape, separated from the higher mass of Mynydd Troed by a clear col.
  • Given that there are dozens of hills named 'Yr Allt' across Wales, arriving at the correct one requires more attention to your grid references than to the signposts.
