About Mynydd Bach

Rising above Swyddffynnon, Mynydd Bach isn't exactly a giant, but what it lacks in altitude, it makes up for in dramatic history and expansive views of Ceredigion. It’s the perfect spot for those who prefer their mountain walks seasoned with Victorian land-rights rebellion and slightly damp socks.

Did You Know?

  • The hill was the site of the 'War of the Little Mountain' in the 1820s. Local residents revolted against Augustus Brackenbury, a landowner who tried to enclose the common land, repeatedly burning down his newly built mansions in protest.
  • A prominent stone monument on the plateau commemorates four famous Welsh poets—T. Gwynn Jones, Islwyn Ffowc Elis, Alun Cilie, and W.J. Gruffydd—who all lived in the communities surrounding this upland.
  • The slopes are home to Llyn Eiddwen, a glacial lake and Site of Special Scientific Interest. It remains one of the few places in the UK where you can spot the rare and delicately named floating water-plantain.
  • From the ridge, you get a bird's-eye view of Cors Caron, one of the finest raised bog systems in Europe. It serves as a helpful visual warning of exactly what your boots will look like if you wander too far off the stony tracks.
  • Navigating the plateau is a high-stakes game of 'guess the depth of the puddle' played against unimpressed local sheep. You will likely finish the walk with a profound respect for 19th-century rebels and a very specific, rhythmic squelch in your left boot.
