About Larg Hill

Rising above the Stinchar Valley in the rugged backcountry of South Ayrshire, this Hump offers a quiet alternative to the busier Galloway peaks. Its rounded, moorland slopes provide an unfenced sense of space, overlooking the secluded wooded glens near Barr and the distant, silver expanse of the Firth of Clyde.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'An Learg', which translates simply as 'the slope' or 'the hillside', a common descriptive term for the rolling terrain of the Southern Uplands.
  • From the 440m summit, there are clear views east toward the higher granite bulk of Shalloch on Minnoch and southwest across the undulating Carrick forest towards the distinctive profile of Ailsa Craig.
  • The hill is often approached via the Nick of the Balloch, a high, narrow mountain pass that serves as a dramatic gateway between the Girvan and Stinchar valleys.
  • Despite being a classified Hump, the lack of established paths on these slopes means you are far more likely to encounter a red kite or a stray sheep than a fellow hiker.
