About An Stac

Rising sharply above the shores of Loch Slapin on the Strathaird peninsula, this rugged peak offers a steep, scree-heavy ascent. Often overshadowed by its massive neighbour, Bla Bheinn, it provides a spectacular vantage point for the Black Cuillin ridge and the fragmented coastline of southern Skye.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, where 'Stac' refers to a steep, conical hill or a prominent rock, a fitting description for its sharp profile when viewed from the coastal road at Torran.
  • Positioned on the southern flank of the Bla Bheinn massif, the summit offers an unparalleled perspective of the 'Great Gully' and the dramatic gabbro architecture of its higher Munro neighbour.
  • The view southwards across the Sea of the Hebrides is exceptionally clear, taking in the distinct profiles of the Small Isles, specifically the jagged peaks of Rum and the 'Scuir' of Eigg.
  • Despite its modest height, the terrain is characteristically 'Skye'—a relentless mix of steep grass, loose scree, and occasional outcrops of volcanic rock that demand more effort than the map suggests.
