About Meall a' Bhuirich

Rising from the remote Sutherland moorland north of Oykell Bridge, this rounded summit offers a quiet vantage point over the rugged interior. Though modest in height, its isolated position provides a sprawling perspective of the Assynt giants, particularly the eastern flanks of Ben More Assynt and Conival across the empty straths.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Meall a' Bhuirich', which translates as the 'Hill of the Belling'. This refers to the deep, guttural roar of red deer stags during the autumn rut, a sound that defines the character of these remote glens.
  • From the summit, walkers are treated to an excellent perspective of the River Cassley as it snakes through the glen to the north, cutting a silver path through the vast, brown expanse of the Sutherland peatlands.
  • To the west, the hill overlooks the impressive limestone and quartzite ramparts of the Breabag ridge, which guards the approach to the higher peaks of the Assynt forest.
  • As a Hump (a hill with a drop of at least 100 metres on all sides), it possesses a surprising sense of independence and isolation despite its relatively low elevation.
  • The terrain is primarily a masterclass in Sutherland’s favourite element—waterlogged peat—meaning your boots will almost certainly be significantly heavier at the summit than they were at the road.
