Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, where Sròn translates to 'nose'—a common term for a prominent ridge or spur—and na Gaoithe means 'of the wind'. It is a literal description of this exposed shoulder which catches the prevailing weather blowing in from Loch Alsh.
  • From the summit, the view south is dominated by the sharp, serrated profiles of the Kintail peaks, while to the east, the eye follows the winding River Elchaig as it disappears into the remote wild land towards Iron Lodge.
  • Access to the hill usually begins from the tiny hamlet of Killilan, following the glen floor before a steep, trackless climb that requires a good eye for a line through the craggy outcrops.
  • Given the name translates to Windy Nose, it is perhaps the most honestly titled hill in the region, usually living up to its reputation well before you have reached the summit cairn.
