About Glas Mheall Mor

Reaching over 900 metres, this Munro Top forms a significant shoulder on the eastern flank of Càrn nan Gabhar within the Beinn a’ Ghlò massif. It offers a quieter, more expansive perspective of the remote Forest of Atholl than the main summit, looking out across the deep trench of Gleann Mòr.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from Scottish Gaelic, the name translates as the ‘Great Grey Hill’. 'Glas' typically refers to a pale green or grey colour, likely reflecting the weathered quartzite scree that gives the Beinn a’ Ghlò range its distinctive, shimmering appearance from a distance.
  • Positioned as a Munro Top of Càrn nan Gabhar, it is usually visited as part of a long, four-peak traverse of the Beinn a’ Ghlò range starting from Loch Moraig. It sits on a high, stony plateau that feels significantly more isolated than the often-busy main ridge path.
  • The summit offers an excellent vantage point over the desolate expanse of the Tarf Water to the north, looking directly toward the remote hills of the Mounth and the high, sprawling plateau of the Cairngorms beyond.
  • This is prime territory for mountain hares and ptarmigan, which favour the high-altitude stony ground and alpine-arctic vegetation found on the shoulder between this top and its parent peak.
  • Many walkers only realise they’ve missed this 'Large' hill when they return to the car and consult their maps, having been too distracted by the final pull up to Càrn nan Gabhar to notice the 928-metre shoulder off to the east.
