About Beinn Bhuidhe

Tucked away in the rugged wilderness of Knoydart, this remote peak offers a clear vantage point over Loch Nevis. Reached via long approaches from Inverie or Sourlies, its grassy slopes lead to a summit ridge with commanding views of the jagged Skye Cuillin and the neighbouring 'Rough Bounds' of Knoydart.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Beinn Bhuidhe', meaning 'Yellow Hill', which describes the seasonal colouring of the grasses and mosses on its slopes, particularly after the first frosts of autumn.
  • The summit occupies a prime position in the 'Rough Bounds of Knoydart', providing a direct line of sight across the seawater of Loch Nevis to the remote Sourlies bothy at the head of the loch.
  • Because the hill is situated on the Knoydart peninsula, which has no road access, walkers must either arrive by ferry at Inverie or undertake a multi-day trek from the road head at Kinloch Hourn.
  • From the cairn, the view to the west is dominated by the Black Cuillin of Skye rising across the Sound of Sleat, while the neighbouring peaks of Meall Buidhe and Luinne Bheinn wall in the view to the east.
  • A visit here is a lesson in Highland logistics; it is one of the few hills where the time spent checking ferry timetables is just as critical as the time spent checking the weather forecast.
