Did You Know?
- •The name is Gaelic for 'The Old Man'. In Highland nomenclature, such names often refer to a prominent rock feature resembling a figure, or suggest a 'guardian' peak overlooking a pass or glen.
- •It is a cornerstone of the Ring of Steall, a classic 10-mile ridge circuit. The summit acts as a turning point where the ridge from Stob Coire a' Chàirn swings south towards the village, providing a panoramic view of the entire horseshoe.
- •The northern vista from the summit is exceptional, looking directly across the depths of Glen Nevis to the massive southern 'back' of Ben Nevis and the sharp peaks of the Grey Corries to the northeast.
- •To the west, the summit offers the best profile view of the Devil’s Ridge, the narrow and undulating arête that connects Sgùrr a' Mhaim to the main Mamore spine.
- •Despite the name suggesting a leisurely pace, the hill's southern flank rises nearly 800 metres in a very short distance, a gradient well-designed to make even the fittest walker feel every bit as old as the mountain's namesake.
