About An Grianan

Rising above the head of Glen Creran near Elleric, this prominent Marilyn offers a rugged ascent through typical Argyll terrain. Though modest in height at 549 metres, its position provides a steep, rewarding climb with a sense of isolation often missing from the more popular Munros found further inland.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'An Grianán', which translates as 'the sunny spot' or 'solarium'. In a Highland context, it usually refers to a prominent knoll or viewpoint that catches the light even when the surrounding glens are in shadow.
  • Positioned at the western edge of the mountains surrounding Glen Coe, the summit provides a clear outlook across the sea loch of Loch Creran towards the Firth of Lorn and the distant hills of Mull.
  • The hill is frequently climbed from the road end at Elleric, using the forestry tracks of Glen Creran before breaking onto the open, heathery slopes that lead to the summit cairn.
  • While it sits in the shadow of the higher Beinn Sgulaird, An Grianan is the best place to appreciate the scale of Sgulaird’s complex western ridges and the deep trench of the River Creran below.
  • Given the high average rainfall of the Argyll coast, naming this particular peak 'the sunny spot' suggests either a very specific meteorological anomaly or a classic piece of Gaelic optimism.
