About Garn Fawr

Perched on the Pencaer peninsula, Garn Fawr is less a mountain and more a craggy prehistoric lookout with an attitude. It’s an Iron Age hillfort offering sweeping coastal views, provided the Atlantic gales don't blow you and your lunch straight back to the Neolithic.

Did You Know?

  • The summit is crowned by an impressive multi-vallate Iron Age hillfort. Its stone ramparts remain remarkably preserved, suggesting the prehistoric residents were very committed to their 'no uninvited guests' policy.
  • Geologically, the hill is composed of intrusive volcanic rhyolite. This stubborn rock has resisted millions of years of erosion, standing tall while the surrounding landscape opted for a more submissive, flatter lifestyle.
  • The hill overlooks the site of the 1797 Last Invasion of Britain. A French force landed nearby but surrendered shortly after, allegedly mistaking local women in red traditional dress for British Redcoats.
  • Despite its modest height of 213 meters, it serves as a crucial navigational landmark for sailors. On a clear day, the view extends across the Irish Sea, though clear days in this region are often sold separately.
  • The final scramble to the top is just challenging enough to make you feel like a rugged explorer, right up until you find a sheep already there, staring at your heavy breathing with utter ovine disdain.
