About Knockatee [Ballinard]

Rising above the boggy uplands of East Kerry, this modest Tump offers a quiet moorland experience away from the busier peaks to the west. Its summit provides a clear vantage point over the undulating landscape between Castleisland and the Derrynasaggart Mountains, characterized by a mix of commercial forestry and rough grazing.

Did You Know?

  • The name Knockatee is derived from the Irish 'Cnoc an Tí', which translates as 'Hill of the House', though no archaeological evidence of a substantial dwelling remains on the summit today.
  • The secondary name, Ballinard, comes from the townland in which the hill sits; 'Baile an Áird' means 'townland of the height', reflecting its local prominence in this section of the Mullaghareirk Mountains.
  • From the 410m high point, walkers can look west across the lowlands toward the Slieve Mish Mountains on the Dingle Peninsula and south to the distinctive twin peaks of the Paps of Anu.
  • The terrain is typical of the East Kerry and West Limerick border, consisting largely of Old Red Sandstone covered by blanket bog and wet heath.
  • It is the sort of summit where the most significant obstacle to reaching the top is often a particularly stubborn farm gate or a patch of deep rushes rather than the gradient itself.
