About Glenkeel Top
Tucked into the rugged Caha Mountains of the Beara Peninsula, this 417m summit offers a quiet vantage point above the narrow valley from which it takes its name. The terrain is classic West Cork sandstone—weathered rocky ribs interspersed with bog—requiring careful footwork even on a short ascent from the Adrigole side.

Did You Know?
- •The name originates from the Irish 'Gleann Caol', meaning 'narrow glen', referring to the deep-cut valley that runs southwards from the ridge toward Bantry Bay.
- •It sits on the high ground within the Caha Mountains, a range known for its complex, glaciated Old Red Sandstone topography which can make navigation surprisingly tricky in poor visibility.
- •The summit offers an excellent, close-up view of the famous 'stepped' profile of Hungry Hill to the west, as well as the long finger of the Beara Peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic.
- •While officially a Tump, most walkers encounter this top as a minor waypoint while navigating the long, wild ridge between Glengarriff and Castletownbere.
- •The local terrain is roughly equal parts sandstone and standing water; a pair of waterproof boots is less of a suggestion and more of a requirement for maintaining your dignity.
