About Little Carron

Sitting in the Ballyhoura Mountains on the Limerick-Cork border, this Tump offers a quieter alternative to its higher namesake, Carron Mountain. The terrain is typical of the range—largely forested with tracks leading toward a summit that provides clear, southern views across the Blackwater Valley towards the distant Nagles Mountains.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish word 'Carn', referring to a heap of stones or a burial cairn, a common feature on Irish summits of this elevation.
  • To the east, the view is dominated by the massive sandstone wall of the Galtee Mountains, specifically the high peaks of Galtymore and Lyracappul which rise sharply above the intervening Funshion River valley.
  • Much of the hill is covered by commercial forestry managed by Coillte; successful navigation to the summit often depends on finding the correct fire breaks through the dense stands of Sitka spruce.
  • The ten-metre height difference between this peak and the adjacent Carron Mountain is a matter of great cartographic importance, though it is unlikely to be noticed by anyone actually walking between the two.
