About Cnoc Breac [Knockbrack]

Tucked away on the western fringes of the Twelve Bens, this modest Tump offers a quiet escape from the busier horseshoe routes. Its terrain is quintessential Connemara—a mix of rough grasses and quartzite outcrops. From the top, you gain an excellent perspective of Diamond Hill and the jagged Atlantic coastline.

Did You Know?

  • Cnoc Breac translates from Irish as 'Speckled Hill'. This refers to the 'speckled' appearance of the hillside, where outcrops of white-grey quartzite pierce through the dark covering of heather and blanket bog.
  • Positioned as an outlier to the west of the main peaks, the summit provides an uninterrupted view of the indented Connemara coastline, specifically looking over Ballynakill Harbour towards the Atlantic.
  • The hill sits within the Connemara National Park, serving as a lower-altitude buffer between the coastal lowlands and the high, sharp ridges of Benbaun and Bencullagh.
  • It is a classic example of Dalradian geology; while the summits of the higher Bens are stripped bare, Cnoc Breac retains a thicker layer of peat, making for a softer, albeit significantly more sodden, underfoot experience.
  • It serves as a useful ego-check for those heading into the main range; if the boggy approach to this 'speckled hill' feels like hard work, the rocky 700-metre peaks further east will certainly prove interesting.
