About Killaha Mountain [Sliabh Choill Atha]

This modest 405m peak sits on the northern side of the Beara Peninsula, offering a quiet alternative to the more rugged Caha Mountains. The ascent through rough grazing land reveals a wide-reaching panorama across the Kenmare River towards the Iveragh Peninsula and the distant, jagged silhouette of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks.

Did You Know?

  • The Irish name Sliabh Choill Atha translates as 'the mountain of the wood of the ford,' suggesting it once overlooked a significant crossing point and forested slopes leading down toward the Kenmare River.
  • From the summit, you get an excellent perspective of the Gleninchaquin valley to the southwest, a classic example of a glaciated coom with its dramatic waterfall and chain of lakes.
  • While it lacks the rocky drama of the higher Beara peaks, its position makes it a prime spot for viewing the Dunkerron Mountains and the Gap of Dunloe across the water to the north.
  • At 405 metres, it is high enough to be classified as a Hump, yet low enough that the Atlantic weather can roll in, soak you, and clear away before you have even found the summit cairn.
