Did You Know?

  • The name Carrigaveema is derived from the Irish Carraig an Mhaidhm, meaning 'Rock of the Landslide' or 'Rock of the Breach,' which suggests a history of geological movement on its steeper flanks.
  • Situated in the Derrynasaggart Mountains, the hill sits within a rugged upland region that has historically served as a natural boundary between the territories of North Cork and Kerry.
  • From the summit, walkers are rewarded with clear views across to the higher peak of Caherbarnagh to the east, while the western horizon is dominated by the prominent peaks of Shronebeg and Shrone Hill.
  • Its status as a Tump ensures that while it lacks the fame of its Kerry neighbours, it is rarely crowded, often leaving the boggy ascent entirely to the local sheep and the occasional dedicated map-checker.
