About Mullaghbolig

Rising above the southern slopes of the Glenelly Valley, this rounded Sperrin summit offers a quiet, pathless experience through typical peat and heather. It serves as a fine viewpoint for the higher peaks of Mullaghcloga and Sawel Mountain to the north, overlooking the deep, glacial trench of the valley below.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish Mullach Bolg, translating as 'summit of the belly' or 'bulging hilltop', which aptly describes the broad, rounded profile characteristic of the central Sperrin range.
  • Categorised as a Hump—a hill with a prominence of at least 100 metres—it is frequently climbed as part of a wider circuit involving the loftier 635m peak of Mullaghcloga to the north.
  • The summit offers an excellent vantage point for surveying the winding course of the Glenelly River as it cuts through the landscape toward Plumbridge.
  • Like much of the surrounding moorland, the top is less of a distinct peak and more of a peat-covered plateau; finding the exact highest point often requires more trust in a GPS than in the visual horizon.
