About Cock Mountain

Rising in the western Mourne Mountains, this broad, heather-covered Hump offers a quieter alternative to the range’s jagged eastern peaks. Positioned between Hen Mountain and the cliffs of Pigeon Rock, it provides a straightforward ascent with expansive views over the Spelga Dam reservoir and the deep-cut Silent Valley.

Did You Know?

  • The name is part of a local ornithological theme, forming a trio of bird-named summits in this corner of the range alongside Hen Mountain and Pigeon Rock Mountain.
  • It is typically climbed as part of a circular route from the Sandbank Road, where the transition from the rocky tors of Hen Mountain to the softer, boggy slopes of Cock Mountain is immediate.
  • From the 505-metre summit, walkers look directly across to the massive embankment of the Spelga Dam and the steep, dark western face of Slieve Muck.
  • The terrain is notably different from the high granite peaks of the eastern Mournes, consisting mostly of deep heather and peat hags that can make for heavy going after rain.
  • Between Hen Mountain, Pigeon Rock, and Cock Mountain, the western Mournes can occasionally feel less like a rugged mountain range and more like a very high-altitude, wind-swept aviary.
