Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish 'Eisc a' Tairbh', which translates as the 'Gully of the Bull', likely referring to the steep, narrow channels carved into the Old Red Sandstone common in this range.
  • The summit occupies a central position on the Beara spine, providing an excellent vantage point to view the neighbouring peaks of Knockowen and Sugarloaf Mountain.
  • Looking south from the top, the narrow, tapering finger of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula is visible across Bantry Bay, often clear enough to spot the white lighthouse at its western tip.
  • A hillwalk in the Cahas is less of a path-following exercise and more of a tactical negotiation with sandstone slabs, hidden hollows, and the inevitable Irish bog.
