About Knocknacloghoge

This steep-sided granite dome sits prominently between Lough Dan and the Inchavore River. Its heather-clad slopes offer a classic Wicklow walking experience, providing an impressive vantage point over the deep glacial trench of the Cloghoge Valley and the dark, moody waters bordering the Luggala estate.

Did You Know?

  • The name is an anglicisation of Cnoc na Clochoige, which translates from Irish as 'hill of the stony place,' a reference to the granite outcrops and boulders that pepper its northern and eastern flanks.
  • The summit offers an exceptional perspective on Lough Dan, with a clear sightline across to the sheer granite cliffs of Luggala and the prominent profile of Tonelagee to the west.
  • It is classified as a Hump (a hill with a prominence of at least 100 metres), a status it earns thanks to the deep col separating it from the higher ground of Kanturk to the south.
  • The final pull from the floor of the Cloghoge Valley is steep enough to make you double-check the map and wonder if the 532-metre measurement was taken on a particularly cold day.
