About Ben Goram

Rising steeply above the Erriff River valley in the Sheeffry Hills, this grassy 560m peak offers a rugged, quieter alternative to the popular nearby summits. Its position provides a commanding perspective over the narrow waters of Killary Harbour and the imposing northern precipices of the Mweelrea massif.

Did You Know?

  • Binn Ghorm (Ben Goram) is Irish for 'Blue Peak.' In Irish nomenclature, 'ghorm' often describes a deep, dark blue or even a dark green, referring to the way the shadows settle on the steep, heather-clad slopes when viewed from a distance.
  • The hill is a key component of the Sheeffry Hills, a range whose Irish name, Na Síofraí, translates to 'the fairy spirits,' hinting at the folklore associated with these high, often mist-shrouded ridges.
  • From the summit, the view north across the drumlins of Clew Bay is exceptional, but the highlight is the sight of the Doolough Pass to the west, where the mountains drop precipitously into the dark waters of the lough.
  • Hillwalkers frequently include Ben Goram as part of a high-level traverse of the Sheeffry ridge, usually connecting it with the higher Barrclashcame to the west for a long day of undulating moorland walking.
  • Given the boggy nature of the lower approaches from the Erriff valley, you may find that 'Blue Peak' is a somewhat optimistic name for a hill that spends much of its time being various shades of sodden peat-brown.
