About Carran NE Top
Rising above the remote valley of Glanlee, this rugged 561-metre shoulder is a typical Tump of the Shehy Mountains. Characterised by boggy stretches and sandstone outcrops, it offers a quieter alternative to the main Carran summit, with expansive views south towards the deep-set glacial hollow of Gougane Barra.

Did You Know?
- •The name Carran likely derives from the Irish Gaelic 'An Carn', meaning 'the cairn', referring to the stony summit features common throughout this range.
- •This summit is often visited as part of a high-level traverse from the main Carran peak, following the undulating ridge that marks the upland boundary between County Cork and County Kerry.
- •From this northeast vantage point, you gain a clear view down the length of the Lee Valley, with the forest-shrouded waters of Gougane Barra tucked into the cliffs directly to the south.
- •In the Shehy Mountains, 'dry underfoot' is a relative term that usually means the water only reaches your ankles rather than your knees.
