About Mangerton South Top

Situated on the broad, peat-covered plateau south of the main Mangerton Mountain summit, this high point offers a wilder perspective of the Killarney range. The terrain is often damp and trackless, leading walkers away from the popular Devil’s Punchbowl towards the remote, rugged borders of the Shehy Mountains.

Did You Know?

  • The name Mangerton is derived from the Irish 'Mhangarta', meaning 'the long-haired', a description of the coarse, wind-blown grasses and sedge that cover the mountain’s expansive, undulating upper slopes.
  • While the main summit is famous for the Devil’s Punchbowl corrie, the South Top overlooks the equally impressive Horse’s Glen to the east, containing the three distinct glaciated lakes of Lough Erhogh, Lough Managh, and Lough Garagarry.
  • This peak acts as a bridge between the high Killarney peaks and the lower Shehy Mountains; from the summit, the view extends south across the Roughty River valley towards the Caha Mountains on the Beara Peninsula.
  • Unlike the well-trodden paths ascending from Muckross, the route to the South Top involves navigating across sprawling peat hags and high-altitude bog, requiring a keen eye for firm ground.
  • If you reach the summit in the thick Kerry mist, the plateau’s lack of defining features ensures your compass will get significantly more exercise than your camera.
