Did You Know?
- •Binn Ard translates from Irish as 'High Peak'. While simple, it describes its position as a major summit on the central ridge of the Brandon group, rather than a mere subsidiary bump.
- •The peak sits directly above a spectacular chain of glaciated tarns known as the Pater Noster lakes, which are stepped down the valley floor in the massive coum to the east.
- •From this vantage point, the view south-west extends across the Blasket Sound to the Great Blasket Island and the distinctive 'Dead Man' profile of Inishtooskert.
- •The ascent from the west follows long, relatively featureless grassy slopes, which can make navigation surprisingly taxing in the frequent sea mists that roll off the Atlantic.
- •It is the kind of summit where walkers often pause for a quick breather, only to realise the views over the jagged ridge toward Brandon Peak are often more impressive than those at the main summit.
