About Mullaghanish NE Top

Rising on the northern fringes of the Derrynasaggart Mountains, this subsidiary summit offers a quieter alternative to the mast-topped main peak of Mullaghanish. The terrain is typical of the Cork-Kerry border, consisting of rough moorland and peat. From this 586-metre vantage point, the distinctive silhouettes of the Paps of Anu dominate the western horizon.

Did You Know?

  • The name Mullaghanish is derived from the Irish Gaelic Mullach an Ois, meaning 'summit of the stag,' a reference to the red deer that historically roamed these high moors.
  • This peak is situated near the border between County Cork and County Kerry, sitting as a shoulder to the main Mullaghanish summit, which is home to one of Ireland's primary television transmitters.
  • To the northeast, the view opens up across the boggy plateaus of the Boggeragh Mountains, while the Musheramore peak is often visible in the distance across the North Cork landscape.
  • It is classified as a Tump, a peak with a prominence of at least 30 metres, which in this case marks its separation from the higher ground to the southwest.
  • While the main summit is impossible to miss due to its 220-metre mast, the NE Top remains a relatively overlooked spot, perfect for those who find the hum of a national transmitter slightly detrimental to the wilderness experience.
