About Carn Mountain

Rising in the Western Mournes, this broad, heather-clad peak offers a quieter perspective than the range’s busier central summits. The Mourne Wall tracks directly over its rounded crest, guiding walkers between the Ott track and Slieve Muck. From the top, you are rewarded with a clear view of Doan’s distinctive profile and Ben Crom reservoir.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a simple derivation from the Irish 'Carn', referring to a cairn or heap of stones, a common feature used to mark ancient burial sites or summits across the island.
  • It serves as a vital navigation point for those walking the Mourne Wall, as the granite structure leads directly across the summit before dropping steeply toward the base of Slieve Muck.
  • From the summit, the view northeast highlights the dramatic geography of the range, looking across the blue waters of the Ben Crom reservoir toward the craggy tors of Slieve Bearnagh.
  • The northern slopes overlook Lough Shannagh, the largest natural lake in the Mournes, which sits in a high glacial basin surrounded by Carn, Slieve Loughshannagh, and Ott Mountain.
  • Walking here often involves a direct physical relationship with the Mourne Wall; it is less a hike and more a lesson in how much effort Edwardian stonemasons were willing to expend on a boundary line.
