Did You Know?

  • The name is an anglicised version of the Irish 'Carn', meaning a heap of stones or a cairn, a common descriptor for peaks that served as ancient markers or possessed notable rocky outcrops.
  • The summit is a key waypoint on the Mourne Wall, a 22-mile dry stone boundary built between 1904 and 1922. Following the wall from the summit to the south-west leads walkers down a punishingly steep descent toward the col with Slieve Muck.
  • From the summit, the view into the heart of the range is exceptional; the peak of Doan appears as a sharp, dark cone rising from the moorland, framed by the sprawling waters of the Ben Crom Reservoir and the granite cliffs of Slieve Binnian.
  • Its central location provides one of the best vantage points for observing the scale of the Silent Valley reservoir project, an engineering feat that supplies much of the water for the city of Belfast.
  • Navigating this summit is perhaps the most straightforward task in the range; as long as you can find the massive stone wall, you simply follow the granite blocks uphill until they stop going up.
