About Tievnabinnia East Top
Sitting just below the 600-metre mark in the rugged Sheeffry Hills, this eastern shoulder offers a high-level traverse along a broad, peat-clad ridge. While overshadowed by its higher western parent, it provides a stark vantage point overlooking the Glenummera valley and the looming, dark mass of Mweelrea to the west.

Did You Know?
- •The name originates from the Irish Taobh na Binne, meaning 'the side of the peak,' which aptly describes its role as a secondary summit on the long Sheeffry ridge.
- •From this vantage point, there are clear views across the Doolough Pass to the quartzite peaks of the Twelve Bens in Connemara to the south.
- •Despite its 599-metre elevation, the hill’s northern flank falls away sharply into dramatic glacial hanging valleys, a characteristic feature of this South Mayo range.
- •It sits just one metre shy of the 600-metre threshold often used to distinguish mountains from hills, a fact that may annoy those who prefer their summits in round numbers.
