About Cushnaficulla

Sitting within the rugged Caha Mountains on the Beara Peninsula, this Tump offers a classic slice of West Cork wilderness. Just under the 600-metre mark, its rocky sandstone slopes provide clear perspectives over the deep waters of Glanmore Lake and the serrated ridge leading towards the higher peak of Hungry Hill.

Did You Know?

  • The name is an anglicisation of Cois na Feadhchoille, which translates from Irish as 'the foot of the whistling wood,' hinting at a time when these exposed slopes were more heavily forested.
  • The summit sits on a high ridge between the Healy Pass and the Borlin Valley, making it a common waypoint for those walking the long-distance technical crest of the Caha range.
  • From the top, there are sharp, uninterrupted views north across the Kenmare River towards the MacGillycuddy's Reeks on the Iveragh Peninsula.
  • The terrain is typical of the Beara interior, characterized by 'sandstone pavement' and ribs of rock that can make navigation tricky in the low cloud frequently blown in from the Atlantic.
  • Falling less than four metres short of the 600-metre mark, it misses out on several major mountain lists, a fact that the local sheep seem entirely indifferent to.
