About Table Mountain

Sitting on the high ridge connecting Conavalla and Camenabologue, this broad, peat-covered plateau lives up to its name. It is a wild, remote spot in the Wicklow Mountains, often heavy with mist. The terrain is notoriously boggy, but the reward is a clear, uncluttered view across the deep cleft of Glenmalure toward Lugnaquilla.

Did You Know?

  • The name is purely descriptive of its flat, level profile when viewed from the surrounding valleys, particularly from the west. Unlike many nearby peaks with ancient Irish names, this English label reflects the hill's striking geometric appearance.
  • It serves as a vital 'crossroads' on the high-level ridge walk between the Glen of Imaal and Glenmalure. Navigating its flat top in poor visibility is famously difficult due to a lack of distinct landmarks and a series of confusing peat hags.
  • From the summit, you get a particularly impressive perspective of the massive North Prison corrie on Lugnaquilla, Wicklow’s highest peak, which looms across the valley to the southeast.
  • The summit area is part of a vast, high-altitude blanket bog. During wet periods, the plateau acts as a massive sponge, feeding the headwaters of the King's River to the north and the Avonbeg to the south.
  • It is one of the few places in Ireland where you can walk for a kilometre in a straight line at 700 metres elevation and still feel like you are standing in the middle of a very wet field.
